Meet James Cole
Your Local English Builder

I’ve been building and renovating properties in Axarquía for over 20 years. More importantly, I’ve lived here for 27 years – since I was 12 years old. This isn’t just where I work; it’s my home.

That means I understand both sides: what British homeowners expect from a quality builder, and how to navigate the Spanish building system to deliver it. I am fluent in English and Spanish, handle all the paperwork, and know the local suppliers, regulations, and property challenges inside out.

My Story

Growing Up in Cómpeta

My family moved to Cómpeta when I was 12 years old. While most British kids were adjusting to secondary school back in the UK, I was learning Spanish in a village school in the Axarquía mountains. It wasn’t always easy, but it gave me something invaluable – true bilingual ability and a deep understanding of Spanish culture and community.

I went to school here, made lifelong friends here, and learned the language not from textbooks but from daily life. That’s why I can handle complex municipal paperwork, negotiate with Spanish suppliers, and understand the nuances of local building regulations – skills that most British builders working in Spain simply don’t have.

Why I Became a Builder

I started working in construction at 19, initially helping with small renovation projects around Cómpeta. I quickly realised there was a real need for someone who could bridge the gap between British homeowners and the Spanish building system. Too many people were struggling with language barriers, unreliable builders, and confusion over permits and regulations.

Over 20 years later, I’ve built a reputation for quality work, clear communication, and honest pricing. I specialise in bathroom renovations and tiling because these require precision and an understanding of both British expectations and Spanish techniques – particularly when it comes to waterproofing and working with the local climate.

True Bilingual Capability

When I say I’m bilingual, I don’t mean I can “get by” in Spanish. I mean I’m completely fluent in written and spoken Spanish, at the same level as English. I can read and complete complex ayuntamiento applications, negotiate building contracts, order materials with specific technical requirements, and handle any situation that requires professional-level Spanish.

This is crucial for building permits and planning permissions. Many British builders in Spain rely on gestures and basic phrases, which is fine for simple jobs but completely inadequate when dealing with municipal authorities or technical building regulations. I handle all of this properly, in Spanish, so you don’t have to worry about misunderstandings or mistakes.

Understanding Both Cultures and Standards

British Expectations

I understand what British homeowners expect: clear written quotes, turning up when promised, regular updates, clean work sites, and quality finishes that meet UK standards.

I provide detailed quotes in English, keep you informed throughout the project, and deliver work to the standards you’re familiar with from the UK. No vague estimates, no “mañana” culture, no surprises.

Spanish Expertise

At the same time, I know how Spanish building systems work: the permit process, local building codes, dealing with ayuntamientos, sourcing materials from Spanish suppliers, and working with the climate.

This combination means you get British standards of service and communication, delivered within the Spanish system correctly and legally. Best of both worlds.

Local Connections and Reputation

After 27 years in Cómpeta and 20+ years as a builder, I know this area and its properties intimately.

I Know the Properties

Village houses in Cómpeta, Frigiliana, and throughout Axarquía have common issues: damp in solid stone walls, narrow street access, and older plumbing systems. I’ve worked on hundreds of these properties and know exactly what to expect and how to solve problems.

I Know the People

I have relationships with local ayuntamiento officials, quality suppliers throughout Málaga province, and trusted tradespeople for specialist work. This network ensures smooth projects and fair pricing for materials.

I Know the Regulations

Building regulations vary by municipality in Spain. I know what’s required for permits in Cómpeta, Nerja, Torrox, and throughout the region. I can navigate the system efficiently and correctly.

I Know the Climate

Spanish building requires different techniques than the UK. Materials, waterproofing, and ventilation all need to account for hot summers and winter rains. I use methods proven to work in this climate.

The Team

While I personally manage every project and handle all client communication, I work with a small team of skilled tradespeople I’ve known and trusted for years.

Small and Professional

We’re not a large company with dozens of crews. We’re a small, professional team that focuses on quality over quantity. This means I’m present on every job, you always know who’s working on your property, and we maintain high standards throughout.

Specialist Skills

For specialist work like electrical installations or gas fitting, I work with qualified local professionals who meet Spanish safety standards. All subcontractors are people I’ve worked with successfully on multiple projects.

Direct Communication

You deal directly with me from the initial quote through to project completion. No middlemen, no language barriers, no confusion. I manage the team, coordinate all aspects of the work, and keep you informed every step of the way.

My Service Philosophy

1

Honest Pricing

I provide detailed written quotes before any work begins. The price I quote is the price you pay – no hidden costs, no “extras” that mysteriously appear later. If unexpected issues arise during the work, I discuss them with you before proceeding.

2

Clear Communication

Everything in writing, everything in English. Quotes, timelines, permit status, project updates – you’ll always know exactly what’s happening. I respond to calls and emails promptly, and I’m available throughout your project.

3

Respect for Your Property

We treat your home with respect. Work sites are kept as clean as possible, we use dust sheets, and we clean up thoroughly at the end of each day. Your property is important to you, and we handle it accordingly.

4

Quality Workmanship

I take pride in the quality of work we deliver. Tiling is done with precision, waterproofing is thorough, and finishes meet professional standards. I don’t cut corners – your renovation needs to last, and reputation matters to me.

5

Long-Term Relationships

Many of my clients come back for additional work or recommend me to friends buying in the area. Whether it’s a small repair or a complete renovation, I treat every job with the same professionalism. I’m building a long-term business based on trust and quality work, not quick profits.
